I wanted to go up to the top of the ridge to hunt deer, and my dad and I got up super early to make sure we got up there by daylight. I was walking behind my dad, stepping in his footsteps to make less noise in the crunchy, dry leaves. I was focused on being quiet, so my dad wouldn’t be mad at me, and suddenly he stopped and whispered, “listen”. We took several steps and then suddenly stopped. I heard, later measured at about 150 feet away through the laurel, footsteps that suddenly stopped as well. My Dad walked a few more steps and I noticed then that the footsteps started right after ours and then stopped whenever we stopped. I assumed it was bear or deer, and we went on hunting with no further incident. My dad and I never talked about it. I continued to hunt that area over the years and learned a great deal about the game animals in Eastern Tennessee. I now know that it was no animal. It paralleled us at exactly 150 feet all the way up the mountain, stopping when we stopped, and traveling when we traveled. It could only have been something walking on two legs with intelligence and although we had flashlights, our fellow travelers did not! As we sat down to hunt, the noises stopped, and we never saw anything after daylight.
