Austin King, a 22-year-old concession worker at Yellowstone National Park, embarked on a solo backpacking trip to summit Eagle Peak, the park’s highest mountain at 11,372 feet. His journey began on September 14, 2024, when he was dropped off by boat at Terrace Point near Yellowstone Lake. Over the next few days, he navigated through challenging terrain, including Howell Creek and a cabin site, before reaching the summit on September 17.

At the summit, Austin called friends and family, describing extreme weather conditions such as fog, rain, sleet, hail, and strong winds. Despite the harsh environment, he expressed his excitement and awe, leaving a note in the summit registry that read, “Life is beautiful, get out and LIVE IT!” Tragically, he failed to return to his boat pickup on September 20, prompting extensive search efforts.

The search involved over 85 rescuers, helicopters, search dogs, and uncrewed aircraft, but was hindered by heavy snow and mechanical issues with rescue planes. His father, Brian King-Henke, made the heartbreaking decision to return home to Minnesota after rescue plans were halted. The search transitioned into a recovery mission, and Austin remains missing.
